Our Design and Technology lessons equip us with the skills, knowledge and understanding to design and make functional products. We are able to use our imagination and our creativity to make products that solve real and relevant problems, thinking about our own needs, wants and values and those of others. As we explore past and present design and technology around us, we become more confident and able to participate within an increasingly technological world.

DT 2015-2016

Nursery – Spring Term

Topic: Mother’s Day cards, Easter cards and baskets, Jack and the Beanstalk, Aliens

Skills: Construction and joining, using tools, manipulating materials, selecting appropriate tools and resources.

Tools/ Equipment: Card, sequins, glue, sellotape, wiggly eyes, art straws, boxes, tubes, pots, lolly sticks, match sticks.

 

Nursery- Summer Term

Topic: Dinosaurs

Skills: Construction and joining, using tools, manipulating materials, selecting appropriate tools and resources.

Tools/ Equipment: Card, sequins, glue, sellotape, wiggly eyes, art straws, boxes, tubes, pots, lolly sticks, match sticks.

 

Reception- Spring Term

Topic: Three Billy Goats Gruff, superheroes, growing- Jack and the Beanstalk

Skills: Construction and joining, developing simple use of tools.

Tools/ Equipment: Basic cardboard boxes for modelling, card, sellotape, glue.

 

Reception- Summer Term

Topic: To be confirmed

Skills: Construction and joining, developing simple use of tools.

Tools/ Equipment: Basic cardboard boxes for modelling, card, sellotape, glue.

 

Year 1- Spring Term

Topic: Easter egg containers (textiles)

Skills: Using scissors, measuring and marking out, using a template, using basic sewing techniques, joining textiles with a running stitch, colouring and decorating textiles.

Tools/ Equipment: Thick plastic needles, thread, felt, sequins, beads.

 

Year 1- Summer Term

Topic: Moving vehicles

Skills: Begin to understand how wheels work, assemble and join materials (wood), understand how to create movement in models.

Tools/ Equipment: Dowels, wheels, glue guns (teachers), wooden corks, wooden sticks, felt tip pens.

 

Year 2- Spring Term

Topic: Easter baskets, modelling- history Titanic

Skills: I can measure and mark out the nearest centimetre. I can use PVA, sticky tape, masking tape etc. to join materials. I can use scissors to safely cut straight lines, corners and curves.

Tools/ Equipment: Scissors, PVA glue, tape, clay

Year 3- Spring Term

Topic: Climate  – Make windmills and rain gauges

Skills: I can use levers, pulleys, gears and winding mechanisms to create movement.

I can strengthen materials using suitable techniques.

I can choose suitable techniques to construct and repair products.

Tools/ Equipment: Cardboard boxes, scissors, paint, glue, sellotape, canes (gardening) scrap paper.

 

Year 3- Summer Term

Topic: Plants – Design a healthy sandwich

Skills: I understand the importance of hygiene when handling food

I can recognise the necessity of following an order in a recipe

I know correct knife grips for cutting and spreading

I can assemble ingredients

Tools/ Equipment: Selection of breads, sandwich filling choices, knives, chopping boards, sandwich bags

 

Year 4- Spring Term

Topic: Vikings

Skills: I can strengthen materials using suitable techniques.

I can choose suitable techniques to construct and repair products.

Tools/ Equipment: Cardboard boxes, scissors, paint, glue, cellotape, straw, art straws, lollipop sticks, matchsticks, scrap paper, newspaper for papier mache.

 

Year 4- Summer Term

Topic: Shang Dynasty

Skills: I can design with purpose.

I can use my knowledge of great designers to inspire my ideas.

Tools/ Equipment: Cardboard boxes, scissors, paint, glue, cellotape, straw, art straws, lollipop sticks, matchsticks, scrap paper, fabrics, fabric paints/dye.

 

Year 5- Spring Term

Topic: Picture Frames

Skills: I can measure, mark and cut out using mms.

I can choose appropriate tools to cut and shape.

I can saw under supervision.

I can join wood together

Tools/ Equipment: Glue guns, saws, staples, balsa wood, wire, screwdriver

 

Year 5- Summer Term

Topic: Cookery

Skills: I understand the importance of hygiene when handling food – washing hands, hair tied back, wearing an apron.

I understand the importance of correct storage of ingredients.

I can show increasing accuracy in measuring and weighing.

I can combine ingredients into a product.

I can choose equipment appropriately.

I can follow a recipe.

I can measure ingredients accurately and scale up or down from a recipe.

Tools/ Equipment: Ingredients, weighing scales, bowls, utensils, jugs

 

Year 6- Spring Term

Topic: Moon vehicles

Skills: -To use crocodile clips to join components.

-To use pins to secure fasteners.

-To use screwdriver to connect wires in a circuit.

– To apply knowledge of electrical circuits and use switches to make e.g. an alarm box or an on / off torch.

– To find a fault in a simple circuit and correct it.

– To create circuits with a number of components such as LEDs, resistors, transistors and chips.

Tools/ Equipment: Wires, batteries, pins, screwdrivers, motor.
